Good post. I'll be honest: the 'tell don't show' nature of the earlier chapters put me off on Primal Hunter personally, but you can't argue with the results. I'll be sure to keep its lessons in mind.

"Readers on RR hate romance."

This is news to me. Any chance you could elaborate?

Wading through reviews, comments, and anecdotal evidence from other writers, it appears that most romance, especially if there’s any drama involved, is a powerful allergen for those readers.

As for the why, it’s mostly speculation. And I don’t think there’s any good enough theory yet.

Few books can pull off romance and still have a massive following, and they are mostly comedies/sliceoflife.

If you go with the murderhobo guy, it’s much much harder to do it. And if you want to, don’t do that before one or two volumes. That’s really all I can say on the topic.

If I had to take a stab in the dark, I'd say it's because readers have been burned by crap romances in other older novels and therefore don't have any faith in newer writers to implement it properly. Or maybe they think feelings are icky and belong on Wattpad, I dunno.

If I had to guess myself, I would say that most web novel writers rely a lot on content more than narrative and style--which is totally understandable. We start writing out of want, not professionalism. That, however, means that when the content is boring/stupid, people take issue with it. Some people want to only read about fights for this reason. I would say readers just don't like most romance because the overall qualities of stories, narrative-wise, is usually low. When they meet romance drama, they just lose it.

Yeah, romances are basically on the extreme side of character interaction and since most struggle to even get the basics of that down...I can see what you mean.
